Learning exchange on the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)Mar 23, 2017
The UNDP South Africa Country Office held a GEF Partners Learning Exchange on 23-24 January 2017 at Environment House, Department of Environmental Affairs. The purpose was to provide a space where project partners could share their project experiences, and their overall programming results and approaches.
In his opening remarks, the UNDP Country Director Mr. Walid Badawi spoke on the need and context of the learning exchange to the 51 participants.
“It is imperative for all of us to facilitate and participate in knowledge exchange initiatives to enhance the level of efficiency and impact of GEF funded projects,” he said.
The South African GEF Operational Focal Point (OFP), Mr. Zaheer Fakir, delivered an informative plenary address about the distinctive role of the GEF Council and the GEF Secretariat, and shared his general perspectives and anecdotes on the forthcoming GEF-7 cycle.
An update on the work of the UN Sustainable Development Results Group was provided by the UNEP South Africa Head of Office Ms. Cecilia Njenga.
Dr. Janice Golding, UNDP SA Programme Manager presented characteristics of the UNDP-GEF Environment Portfolio in South Africa.
The lead resource person, Dr. Phemo Kgomotso, UNDP-Global Environmental Finance Expert facilitated the learning exchange over the course of the two days. Dr. Phemo said that the projects are government-owned, GEF - financed and UNDP assisted.
Dr. Phemo’s guidance focussed on the GEF strategies, general principles, rules, procedures and partnerships. In addition, she provided answers to questions on monitoring and reporting requirements and tools across the various phases of the project cycle; and the responsibilities of the involved entities namely; GEF OFP, Government, Project Board, Executing Agencies, Implementing Agencies among others.
“We will strive to have this on our calendar as an annual event!”
