Celebrating the Leadership Legacy of Nelson Mandela at UN

The United Nations in South Africa joined the world in celebrating Nelson Mandela’s legacy through various activities.

On Tuesday, the 17th the UNCT attended the16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture delivered by Former US President Barak Obama, under the theme “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active citizenship in a Changing World”.

On 18 July 2018, the United Nations Development Programme in South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Thembekile Mandela Foundation in supporting the Leading Like Mandela Leadership Programme. The UNDP will contribute towards the development and improvement of the curriculum; joint identification of participates as well as tracking the programme for the purposes of documenting and sharing lessons and best practices in comparison with similar programmes across the world.

On the same day, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in South Africa joined Graça Machel, Kofi Annan, Lakhdar Brahimi and Mary Robinson for the Elders walk through Johannesburg with Spark of Hope organisations who work for the freedoms Madiba dedicated his life to achieving.

In Pretoria, some UN staff were packing food packs for the underprivileged at Southern Sun in Menlyn. Other activities will continue throughout the month to mark this iconic leader.
