The South African office of the United Nations is deeply saddened by the passing of former UN Secretary-General Mr. Kofi Annan. His passing comes as a huge shock especially after this office walked alongside him at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg on Nelson Mandela International Day last month.

Ms. Nardos Bekele -Thomas, the Resident Coordinator for the UN in South Africa expressed her sadness at the news saying, “I have known Mr. Annan from the time he took office as the Secretary – General. He will be remembered for his peacekeeping and conflict resolution efforts across the globe and in Africa particularly during the aftermath of post-election violence in Kenya in 2008”.

His dedication towards peacekeeping efforts and decades of tireless service and commitment to the UN will always be remembered. The world is indeed a poorer place without his leadership.

Sincere condolences to his family and may his soul Rest In Peace.
