Ladies and Gentlemen, All protocols observed, On behalf of the four partners, the Oliver & Adelaide Tambo Foundation, the Wits School of Governance, the Department for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), let me welcome you all to this eighth edition of this prestigious OR Tambo Debate Series on the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP), with tonight’s debate focusing on the “Green economy”.

I am honoured to have been requested to speak to you in this consultative workshop that seeks to take stock of the domestication of SDGs and to plot a way forward on how to ensure that civil society as well as all marginalised and excluded voices are part of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

In September 2000, the world’s leaders met at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to set out a new global vision to strengthen efforts for peace, human rights, democracy, strong governance, environmental sustainability and poverty eradication. South Africa, together with 188 other UN member countries, adopted the resulting Millennium Declaration, which committed members to ambitious targets with clearly defined timelines. The roadmap for achieving the Declaration’s commitments resulted in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

As you may be aware, the OR Tambo Debate Series on the implementation of the NDP was launched in July 2014 and since then the debates have grown to be a resounding success attracting a diverse set of views and opinions that are no doubt shaping the policy discourse on the different issues debated in the series. As these debates and their associated Round tables evolve, the partners aim to find ways to reach a wider audience all around the country through social media and other means available to ensure that we are truly listening to the voices of the people to whom these policy debates are targeted and in line with the vision 2030 and the SDGs which aim to leave no one behind.

Excellencies, Distinguished Panellists, Members of the Media, Invited Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen. I am pleased to welcome you all to the launch in South Africa, of the 2015 Human Development Report, the latest in the series of global Human Development Reports published by UNDP since 1990. I am also pleased to inform you that shortly after discussions around the Human Development Report, we will also be launching the World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) report produced by one of our sister Agencies, (UNDESA). Let me also note from the onset that this year marks 50 years of the existence of the United Nations Development Programme. During this time, UNDP has played a transformational role in improving peoples’ lives in the nearly 170 countries where it works.
