11 February 2020 - In celebration of the International Day of Women And Girls in Science on the 11thof February, UNDP South Africa and the Embassy of Denmark in South Africa are embarking on a partnership to empower girls in climate robotics and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), in collaboration with Xinabox, FemStem and Sci-Bono.

On the international day of women and girls in science, UNDP South Africa visited Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and explored some of their exciting exhibitions relating to robots, the 4th Industrial Revolution and the Sustainable Development Goals.

As recognised by the United Nations, science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Yet women and girls continue to be underrepresented in STEM-related fields, both in higher education and in research.

To contribute to tackling this challenge, the envisaged project will introduce South African girl learners, and their teachers to the world of coding and robotics. Furthermore, it will equip learners with practical skills and ideas to solve problems related to one of the biggest challenges of our times – climate change. The potential role of youth-led citizen science has not been fully examined in the war against climate change. Hence the project will empower young people to come up with local and youth-led solutions to climate-related issues as an attempt to reduce climate change and promoting developments in renewable energy.
